How much you save cycling to work
Leaving the car at home and cycling to work is good for your health, but how good is it for your wallet? It depends on the distance, how many days you ride, what each kilometre really costs by car and, above all, what you avoid paying at the destination: parking, tolls or fares.
This calculator compares the car cost you avoid with the annual cost of the bike, tells you how much stays in your pocket and how many months the bike takes to pay for itself. It works in any currency.
How the calculation works
- Kilometres per year: round trip × days per week × working weeks.
- Car cost avoided: kilometres × variable cost per km, plus parking, tolls or fares avoided each day.
- Bike cost: price of the bike and gear divided by its lifespan in years, plus annual maintenance.
- Months to pay back the bike: bike price divided by what you save each month after maintenance.
The verdict is based on the share of the avoided car cost that stays with you, which does not depend on the currency.
The variable cost of the car
If the car stays in the garage, insurance, road tax and most depreciation are paid anyway. What you really save is the variable cost: fuel or charging, tyre and brake wear, part of the maintenance. For many cars it is around 0.10-0.30 per km. If cycling lets you give up a whole car, the saving is much larger: in that case add the fixed costs divided by the kilometres.
How much distance matters
The table uses 3 days a week for 46 weeks, a car at 0.20 per km, no parking, an 800 bike lasting 5 years and 100 of maintenance a year.
| One-way distance | Km per year | Car avoided | Bike cost | Net saving | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 km | 552 | 110.40 | 260.00 | −149.60 | Never |
| 5 km | 1,380 | 276.00 | 260.00 | 16.00 | 54.5 months |
| 8 km | 2,208 | 441.60 | 260.00 | 181.60 | 28.1 months |
| 12 km | 3,312 | 662.40 | 260.00 | 402.40 | 17.1 months |
| 20 km | 5,520 | 1,104.00 | 260.00 | 844.00 | 9.6 months |
Counting only fuel and wear, a new bike pays for itself slowly on short trips: a few kilometres by car cost little. A used bike, or one already in the garage, changes the result, because its annual cost falls almost to maintenance alone.
Parking changes everything
With a 5 km one-way trip and 3 days a week, here is the effect of the parking or fares avoided each day:
| Parking avoided per day | Car avoided | Net saving | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 276.00 | 16.00 | 54.5 months |
| 2 | 552.00 | 292.00 | 21.2 months |
| 5 | 966.00 | 706.00 | 11.1 months |
| 10 | 1,656.00 | 1,396.00 | 6.2 months |
In cities where you pay for parking or a transit pass, the daily item often weighs more than the kilometres: even a short trip becomes worthwhile.
How much the days by bike matter
With an 8 km one-way trip and the same assumptions as the first table:
| Days per week | Car avoided | Net saving |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 147.20 | −112.80 |
| 2 | 294.40 | 34.40 |
| 3 | 441.60 | 181.60 |
| 4 | 588.80 | 328.80 |
| 5 | 736.00 | 476.00 |
The bands of the verdict
- Negative saving: the annual bike cost exceeds the car cost avoided.
- Below 25%: a modest saving; health and time matter most.
- 25% to 50%: a real saving, but the bike cost still weighs.
- 50% to 75%: a large saving; the bike pays for itself quickly.
- Above 75%: almost all the car cost avoided stays with you.
Beyond money
Cycling to work is regular exercise without having to find extra time to train, and in cities cycling journey times are often similar to driving, parking included. Route safety, being able to change at work and the weather also matter: many people ride only on some days, which is exactly why the calculator asks for days per week.
Limits of the calculator
The model counts only the car's variable costs, unless you include others in the cost per km, and does not count cycling clothing, bike insurance or theft risk. It puts no value on time, health or avoided emissions. With an e-bike, add charging to annual maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you save by cycling to work?
It depends on distance, days and parking. With an 8 km one-way trip, 3 days a week, a car at 0.20 per km and an 800 bike, you save about 180 a year after the cost of the bike.
What car cost should I enter?
The variable cost per km: fuel or charging, wear and part of the maintenance, often 0.10-0.30 per km. If you give up a whole car, also add the fixed costs divided by the kilometres.
Why does parking matter so much?
Because it is paid every day regardless of kilometres: with a 5 km one-way trip, 2 a day of parking avoided raises the net saving from 16 to 292 a year.
How long does a bike take to pay for itself?
With an 8 km one-way trip and 3 days a week about 28 months; with parking or longer trips much less. On short trips without parking it may never pay for itself.
Is it worth it for short trips?
Financially only if you avoid parking or fares, or use a bike you already own. For health and time it often pays anyway.
How do I account for a used bike or one I already own?
Enter its real price, even zero, and keep the maintenance: the annual bike cost falls and the saving rises.
What about an e-bike?
Enter the e-bike price and add to maintenance the annual cost of charging and the battery replacement divided by the years.
How many working weeks should I enter?
Usually 44-48, after holidays. If you ride less in winter, reduce the weeks or days.
Does the calculator account for car insurance?
No, because you pay it anyway if you keep the car. If cycling lets you sell a car, include the fixed costs in the cost per km.
Does theft risk count?
Not directly. If you want to account for it, add the cost of a good lock or insurance to maintenance.
Can I use it with public transport instead of a car?
Yes: enter 0.01, the minimum allowed, as the cost per km and the daily ticket or pass cost in the parking field.
Does it work in any currency?
Yes. Enter all costs in the same currency; the verdict is based on the share saved, which does not depend on the currency.
