How much baby formula costs

Powdered formula is one of the steadiest costs of the first months. What you spend depends on three things: how much formula you make up each day, how much powder the pack says to use per 100 ml and the price per gram. This calculator estimates your average monthly spend, how many packs you need over a period and how long each one lasts.

How the calculation works

  • Powder per day: ml made up × grams per 100 ml, divided by 100.
  • How long a pack lasts: grams in the pack divided by the powder used per day.
  • Average monthly cost: powder for an average month (30.44 days) times the price per gram.
  • Spend over the period: whole packs to buy, rounded up, times the price.

Grams per 100 ml come from the preparation table on the pack: usually one level scoop per 30 ml of water, or about 13-15 g per 100 ml. Costs are in the currency of the price you enter.

Use and cost by amount

Example with 14 g of powder per 100 ml and 800 g packs at 20:

Formula per dayPowder per dayDays per 800 g packCost per month (20 a pack)
500 ml70 g11.453.27
700 ml98 g8.274.57
900 ml126 g6.395.88

Price per gram matters more than pack size

Same dose, 14 g per 100 ml:

PackPriceCost per 100 mlCost per month at 800 ml a day
400 g10.000.3585.23
800 g20.000.3585.23
800 g30.000.53127.84
1,200 g25.000.2971.02

Two packs with the same price per 100 ml cost the same each month even if one is bigger. To compare products, look at the cost per 100 ml prepared, which the calculator shows among the results.

How to read the result

  • Average monthly cost: the average spend over a month, useful for the family budget.
  • Spend over the period: what you pay buying whole packs; over short periods it can exceed the average because the last pack is not finished.
  • More than 1 litre a day: the calculator flags that this is more than an infant usually drinks.

Limits of the calculation

Amounts change with your baby's age and appetite, and drop once solid foods start: over a long period it is better to calculate each stage separately. Always make up formula following the pack instructions, never dilute it to save money, and ask your paediatrician which formula and amounts are right.

Frequently asked questions

How much does baby formula cost per month?

With 800 ml a day, 14 g of powder per 100 ml and 800 g packs at 20, about 85 a month.

How long does an 800 g pack last?

At 800 ml a day you use about 112 g of powder: the pack lasts just over 7 days.

Where do I find grams per 100 ml?

In the preparation table on the pack: usually one level scoop per 30 ml of water, about 13-15 g per 100 ml.

How do I compare two formulas?

Use the cost per 100 ml prepared, which accounts for both price and dose.

Can I dilute formula to save money?

No: always make it up as instructed, because over-diluted formula does not give enough nutrition.

Why is the period spend higher than the average cost?

Because you buy whole packs: the last one may not be finished at the end of the period.

How much formula does a baby drink?

It depends on age, weight and appetite: follow your paediatrician and the table on the pack.

Does it work with any currency?

Yes: enter the price in your currency and the results will be in that currency.

Formula

G = \frac{V\,q}{100}, \qquad M = 30{,}44\,\frac{G}{C}\,P, \qquad N = \left\lceil 30{,}44\,m\,\frac{G}{C} \right\rceil
