Return loss RL_dB = -20*log10(|Gamma|) misura potenza riflessa rispetto incidente.
Mismatch loss ML_dB = -10*log10(1-|Gamma|^2) potenza persa per mismatch. Potenza riflessa = |Gamma|^2 * P_inc; potenza trasferita = (1-|Gamma|^2) * P_inc.

Formula VSWR + coefficiente di riflessione
Definizione: Gamma = (Zl - Z0) / (Zl + Z0) coefficiente di riflessione complesso (numero adimensionale magnitudo 0-1, fase -180+180 gradi). VSWR = (1+|Gamma|)/(1-|Gamma|) rapporto adimensionale 1-infinito.
Significato fisico: |Gamma| frazione lineare ampiezza onda riflessa rispetto ampiezza onda incidente; |Gamma|^2 frazione potenza riflessa. Standing wave pattern V_max/V_min = VSWR su linea di trasmissione, dovuta interferenza onda incidente + riflessa.
Return loss: RL_dB = -20*log10(|Gamma|). RL=0 dB (totale riflessione open/short); RL=10 dB (10% potenza riflessa); RL=20 dB (1% riflessa); RL=30 dB (0.1%). Connettore SMA tipico RL 30 dB DC-18 GHz.
Mismatch loss: ML_dB = -10*log10(1-|Gamma|^2) potenza persa per mismatch. VSWR=1.5 ML=0.18 dB; VSWR=2.0 ML=0.51 dB; VSWR=3.0 ML=1.25 dB.
Numeri correlati: P_reflected = |Gamma|^2 * P_incident; P_delivered = (1-|Gamma|^2) * P_incident. Smith chart Phillip H. Smith Bell Labs 1939 graphical tool. S-parameters S11 = Gamma input port reflection.

Limiti e considerazioni
- Frequenza dipendenza: VSWR varia con frequenza per antenne reali. Use spot frequency or measure across band of interest network analyzer S11 sweep.
- Connector mismatch: SMA + N + BNC + TNC connettori RF aggiungono VSWR locale tipico 1.05-1.15 per connector. Cumulative effect chain.
- Cable losses: long coaxial cable RG58 RG213 LMR400 attenuates measured VSWR (loss back to source). Real load mismatch can be worse than measured.
- Bandwidth narrow vs broadband: matching network LC stub specifico per frequenza. Broadband matching require stage cascade Chebyshev Bode-Fano.
- Calibration: network analyzer SOLT Short-Open-Load-Through calibration required for accurate VSWR + S11 measurement. NIST traceable reference.
- Power handling: high-power transmitter protection circulator + isolator + load required to absorb reflected power VSWR>1.5 to prevent tube + final stage damage.
- Time-domain reflectometry TDR: alternative measurement technique localize impedance discontinuity along cable + connector + termination using pulse + oscilloscope.
- S-parameters multi-port: VSWR concept applies single port only. Multi-port use S-parameters S11 input reflection + S22 output + S21 transmission gain + S12 isolation.
- Complex Z_load: VSWR concept assumes single-mode TEM transmission line. Waveguides higher-order modes need different formulation.
- Mismatch loss vs return loss: ML potenza persa per mismatch (small fraction); RL ratio reflected to incident dB scale (large fraction at small mismatch).
Errori comuni
Confondere VSWR e RL: VSWR rapporto adimensionale 1-infinito; Return loss dB negativo (-Inf to 0 dB). Tabella conversione VSWR=2 → RL=9.54 dB; VSWR=3 → RL=6.02 dB.
50 Ohm vs 75 Ohm Z0: 50 Ohm RF radio standard amateur professional + cellular + satellite; 75 Ohm CATV cable television video broadcast. Errore mixing -> measured VSWR sbagliato.
Open circuit vs short circuit: Gamma=+1 open; Gamma=-1 short. VSWR=infinito both, ma fase diversa. Phase information lost in VSWR scalar quantity.
Cable loss masquerading low VSWR: long lossy cable measured VSWR low (apparent good match) ma actual load VSWR can be much worse. Use TDR or shorter cable.
Power handling: high-power transmitter VSWR>1.5 protezione circulator + isolator required. Errore ignore -> tube damage + final stage transistor burn.
