What shaving really costs
A cartridge seems cheap, but multiplied by hundreds of shaves a year it becomes a noticeable expense. This calculator compares two shaving systems, for example the cartridges you use now and a safety razor, working out the cost per shave and per year, with the handle spread over the years you use it.
It works in any currency: enter the prices you actually pay.
How the calculation works
- Blade cost per shave: the price of one blade or cartridge divided by the number of shaves it lasts.
- Handle cost per shave: the handle price divided by the shaves over all the years you use it.
- Annual cost: cost per shave × shaves per week × 52.
Shaves per blade vary a lot with hair type, skin and technique: use your own real figure.
Systems compared
5 shaves a week, 260 a year; cartridge handles at 10 for 2 years, a safety razor at 30 for 10 years:
| System | Blade price | Shaves per blade | Handle | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disposable | 0.50 | 2 | — | 65.00 |
| Cartridges | 2.50 | 5 | 10 | 135.00 |
| Premium cartridges | 3.50 | 5 | 10 | 187.00 |
| Safety razor | 0.25 | 4 | 30 | 19.25 |
The handle matters little: what makes the difference is the blade price divided by the shaves it lasts. Safety razor blades often cost a few cents each.
How much frequency matters
Cartridges against a safety razor, with the data from the previous table:
| Shaves per week | Cartridges | Safety razor | Annual saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 57.00 | 9.50 | 47.50 |
| 3 | 83.00 | 12.75 | 70.25 |
| 5 | 135.00 | 19.25 | 115.75 |
| 7 | 187.00 | 25.75 | 161.25 |
The reading bands
- No saving: the alternative costs no less than the current system.
- Below 25%: a small difference.
- 25% to 50%: a worthwhile saving.
- 50% to 75%: you save more than half.
- Above 75%: the cost shrinks to a small fraction.
Limits of the calculator
The calculation does not include foam, gel, soap or aftershave, which often cost as much as the blades: add them separately if you like. A safety razor takes some practice, and a new blade must be handled with care. Electric shavers follow a different cost model, made up of the device, replacement heads and electricity.
Frequently asked questions
How much does shaving with cartridges cost?
With 2.50 cartridges lasting 5 shaves and 5 shaves a week, about 135 a year including the handle.
Is a safety razor worth it?
Often yes: with 0.25 blades lasting 4 shaves, the example costs about 19 a year, about 86% less than cartridges.
How many shaves does a blade last?
It depends on hair, skin and technique: often 3 to 7 shaves. Use your own real figure.
Does the handle weigh much on the cost?
Little: spread over hundreds of shaves, even a 30 handle costs a few cents per shave.
What about disposable razors?
They cost less per piece than cartridges but last few shaves: enter them with a handle price of 0.
Does the calculator include foam and aftershave?
No: work them out separately, as they can cost as much as the blades.
Does it work for electric shavers?
Not directly: an electric shaver has a different cost, made up of the device, replacement heads and electricity.
Can I compare two cartridge brands?
Yes: enter the two cartridges as the current system and the alternative.
Does it work in any currency?
Yes. Enter all prices in the same currency.
