What it costs to run a humidifier

In winter, heating dries the air and many people run a humidifier for hours every day. The cost depends above all on the type: an ultrasonic model draws a few watts, a steam model boils water and uses ten times as much. On top of that come filters or cartridges and, for some models, distilled water. This calculator adds every item into an annual cost and tells you which one weighs most.

It works in any currency: enter the real prices.

How the calculation works

  • Energy: power × hours per day × days of use, times the price per kWh.
  • Filters or cartridges: price × replacements per year.
  • Distilled water: only if you buy it; with tap water enter 0.

The type makes the difference

8 hours a day for 150 days, energy at 0.30 per kWh, filters or cartridges replaced every 3 months:

TypePowerEnergyFiltersAnnual totalEnergy share
Ultrasonic, tap water30 W10.800.0010.80100%
Ultrasonic with cartridge30 W10.8060.0070.8015%
Evaporative with filter50 W18.0080.0098.0018%
Steam350 W126.000.00126.00100%

An ultrasonic humidifier uses very little power, but if it needs cartridges or distilled water those make up the cost. A steam model has no filters, but the electricity bill goes up. With tap water, ultrasonic units can leave a white mineral dust on furniture: that is why many manufacturers recommend cartridges or distilled water.

Hours matter, especially for steam

A 350 W steam humidifier for 150 days:

Hours per day (steam, 350 W)kWh per yearAnnual cost
421063.00
8420126.00
12630189.00
241,260378.00

A humidistat, which switches the unit off when humidity is high enough, cuts the actual running hours.

The reading bands

  • Energy below 30%: filters and water make up the cost; compare their price and lifespan.
  • 30% to 70%: energy and consumables share the cost.
  • 70% and above: energy is the main item, typical of steam models.

Limits of the calculator

Real power varies with the setting, and many units with a humidistat do not run at full power all the time. The calculator does not include the purchase of the unit. Humidity that is too high encourages mould and condensation: much guidance suggests staying around 40-60% relative humidity. Clean the tank regularly as the manufacturer advises.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does an ultrasonic humidifier use?

Very little: at 30 W for 8 hours a day over 150 days it is 36 kWh, about 11 at 0.30 per kWh.

And a steam humidifier?

Much more, because it boils water: at 350 W for 8 hours a day over 150 days it is 420 kWh, about 126.

Which type of humidifier is cheapest?

On the electricity bill, ultrasonic; but with cartridges or distilled water to buy, the total can exceed other models.

Do I need distilled water?

It depends on the model: with hard water, ultrasonic units can leave white mineral dust. Follow the manufacturer's advice.

How often should the filter be changed?

Often every 1-3 months of use, depending on the model and water hardness.

What humidity should I keep at home?

Much guidance suggests 40-60% relative humidity; too high encourages mould and condensation.

Does a humidistat save money?

Yes: it switches the unit off when humidity is high enough, cutting running hours.

Does the calculator include the price of the humidifier?

No, only running costs.

Does it work in any currency?

Yes. Enter all prices in the same currency.
