How much washing your car costs in a year

Many car washes offer an unlimited monthly plan alongside single washes. It only pays off if you wash often enough. This calculator compares three routes, paying per wash, the subscription and doing it yourself at home or at a self-service bay, and shows how many washes a month you need for the subscription to pay for itself.

How the calculation works

  • Paying per wash: price × washes per month × months of use.
  • Subscription: monthly fee × months of use, however often you wash.
  • DIY: cost per wash (products, water, self-service tokens) × washes × months.
  • Break-even: subscription divided by the single wash price. Above that number of washes a month the subscription costs less.

Values are in whatever currency you enter: the calculator works with dollars, pounds, euros or any other currency.

Annual cost by frequency

Example with a wash at 12, a subscription at 30 a month, DIY at 3 per wash, 12 months:

Washes per monthPaying per washSubscriptionDIY
114436036
228836072
2.536036090
3432360108
4576360144
6864360216

With these prices break-even is at 2.5 washes a month: below it paying each time is cheaper, above it the subscription is. DIY stays the cheapest in money, but takes time and equipment.

Washes per month to pay off the subscription

Price of one washSubscription 20 a monthSubscription 30 a monthSubscription 40 a month
82.53.85.0
102.03.04.0
121.72.53.3
151.32.02.7

The pricier the single wash, the sooner the subscription pays off. A cheap plan with expensive single washes pays off even with one wash every two weeks.

The reading bands

  • Below 80% of break-even: you wash too rarely for the subscription to pay off.
  • 80% to 120%: you are close to break-even, the yearly difference is small.
  • Above 120%: you wash often enough that the subscription costs less than paying per wash.

In every case the calculator shows which of the three options costs least per year.

What the calculation leaves out

The comparison is purely financial. It does not count the time DIY takes, the upfront cost of buckets, sponges or a pressure washer, local rules that ban washing cars on the street, or differences in wash quality. Before signing up, check whether the plan has a minimum term, covers every wash program and works at several locations. In months you do not wash, the subscription is still charged: enter as months of use only those you would keep it active.

Frequently asked questions

When is a car wash subscription worth it?

When your washes per month exceed the fee divided by the price of one wash. With a 30 plan and 12 washes, break-even is 2.5 washes a month.

How much does washing a car cost per year?

It depends on price and frequency: 2 washes a month at 12 come to 288 a year, 4 washes to 576.

Is DIY always cheaper?

In money almost always, since it only costs products, water or tokens. It does take time, equipment and, in some areas, a place where washing a car is allowed.

What goes into the DIY cost?

The average spend per wash: your share of shampoo and cloths, the water or the self-service bay tokens.

What if I do not wash the car in winter?

Lower the months of use. The subscription only counts the months it stays active, so cancel it in months you do not use it if the contract allows.

Does it work with any currency?

Yes: enter every price in the same currency and the results will be in that currency.

What does "close to break-even" mean?

That your washes are between 80% and 120% of those needed to pay off the subscription: the difference between the two options is small.

What if there is no subscription?

Enter 0: the calculator compares only single washes and DIY and skips the break-even sentence.
