Window U-Value Calculator 2026
The whole-window U-factor (Uw) is the key parameter for window energy efficiency per ISO 10077-1 and NFRC 100 in the US. Lower U-factor = better insulation. This calculator determines current vs new Uw, annual heat loss in kWh by climate zone, energy bill savings, Energy Star eligibility, and payback with/without IRS Section 25C 30% credit (up to $600/year).
Uw Formula and Components
Whole-window transmittance: Uw = (Ug × Ag + Uf × Af + lg × Ψg) / (Ag + Af) where Ug is center-of-glass U-factor, Uf is frame U-factor, Ψg is spacer linear transmittance.
Annual heat loss: kWh/year = Area × Uw × HDD × 24 / 1000. For 2×3 ft window (~0.56 m²) with Uw 0.35 (2.0 W/m²K SI) in Chicago (6,000 HDD65): 0.56 × 2.0 × 2000 × 24 / 1000 ≈ 54 kWh/year heat loss.
Typical Uw Values by Window Type
- Single glazing + wood (pre-1970): Uw 4.8 W/m²K (0.85 U-factor US) - attic use only
- Single glazing + metal frame: Uw 5.8 (1.02 U-factor) - garage grade
- Double glazing 1980s: Uw 3.2 (0.56 U-factor) - obsolete
- Double glazing 2000s: Uw 2.4 (0.42 U-factor) - pre-2010 basic
- Low-e double glazing: Uw 1.8 (0.32 U-factor) - post-2010 standard
- Low-e double + vinyl 5-chamber: Uw 1.3 (0.23 U-factor) - Energy Star Northern
- Triple glazing + vinyl premium: Uw 0.9 (0.16 U-factor) - Passive House
- Triple glazing + insulated frame: Uw 0.7 (0.12 U-factor) - PHIUS Passive
- Quadruple glazing ultra: Uw 0.5 (0.09 U-factor) - net-zero

Example: 200 sq ft Window Area in Chicago (6,000 HDD)
Home in Chicago (Northern Zone) with 200 sq ft windows, replacing double-pane 1990s (Uw 2.4 / 0.42 U-factor) with Energy Star vinyl low-e (Uw 1.3 / 0.23 U-factor), natural gas heating:
- Current U: 0.42 US (2.4 SI)
- New U: 0.23 US (1.3 SI)
- Current heat loss: 200 × 0.42 × 6000 × 24 / 1000 × 0.17 (converting BTU/m²) ≈ 12,100 kBTU/year
- New heat loss: ≈ 6,600 kBTU/year
- Savings: 5,500 kBTU = 55 therms ≈ 1,610 kWh

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much does whole-home window replacement cost?
Typical 2,000 sq ft home with 15-20 windows: $12,000-30,000 turnkey. Vinyl most popular at $500-1,000/window. Wood premium $1,000-1,800/window. With IRS Section 25C $600/year credit and state rebates, effective cost can drop 15-20%.
What U-factor qualifies for Energy Star?
Depends on zone: Northern ≤ 0.27, North-Central ≤ 0.28, South-Central ≤ 0.30, Southern ≤ 0.40. Most Efficient label requires ≤ 0.22. Choose the lowest available U-factor for your climate zone.
Vinyl or wood windows?
Vinyl: $500-900 installed, zero maintenance, U-factor 0.23 standard, 70% US market. Wood: $800-1,500 installed, classic aesthetic, U-factor 0.25-0.30, needs restaining every 7-10 years. Fiberglass composite ($900-1,800) is premium option with best durability/maintenance ratio.
How much will I save on energy bills?
For 2,000 sq ft home in Chicago with whole-home replacement from Uw 2.4 to 1.3: savings $80-150/year natural gas, $150-250/year propane/oil, up to $400/year electric. Larger savings in cold climates and expensive fuels.
Should I replace all windows at once?
Replacing all at once maximizes IRS credit (one filing) and contractor efficiency (volume discount 10-15%). Installation season (spring/fall ideal) matters: avoid winter (frozen seals) and summer heat (vinyl expansion). For phased replacement over 2-3 years, still get tax credit each year up to $600.
Is triple glazing worth it?
In Northern Zone yes: $200-400 premium per window pays back with 15-25 year utility savings + property value. In Southern Zone rarely worth it - double low-e is sufficient. Triple is mandatory for Passive House certification and Net Zero homes.
What about accessory treatments (shutters, storm doors)?
Storm windows add secondary layer, reduces Uw by 30-40% when combined with existing. Cost $100-300 per window installed. IRS Section 25C includes storm windows. Exterior shutters offer acoustic + security + aesthetic benefits, $200-500 per window.
