Von Karman rotating disk flow calculator
The von Karman rotating disk flow calculator determines the boundary layer thickness delta, the torque M and the axial suction velocity w_inf for an infinite disk rotating at angular velocity Omega about its z-axis immersed in an initially quiescent fluid, per the exact 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes solution found by Hungarian-American physicist Theodore von Karman 1921 in ZAMM (Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik) vol. 1, p. 233-252 "Uber laminare und turbulente Reibung". The similarity variable: zeta = z sqrt(Omega/nu) reduces 3D PDE to 1D ODE in zeta. The velocity profiles: u_r = r Omega F(zeta) radial, u_theta = r Omega G(zeta) azimuthal, u_z = sqrt(nu Omega) H(zeta) axial, with F(0)=0, G(0)=1 (no-slip wall), F(inf)=0, G(inf)=0 (quiescent at infinity), H(0)=0. The 3 key formulas:
- Boundary layer thickness delta = 5.5 sqrt(nu/Omega) [m] (99% external velocity definition)
- Torque per face M = 0.616/2 rho sqrt(nu) Omega^(3/2) R^4 [N m] (Cochran 1934 numerical coefficient)
- Axial velocity at infinity w_inf = -0.886 sqrt(nu Omega) [m/s] (suction toward disk, negative sign). The physics: centrifugal force on wall ejects fluid radially outward (centrifugal pump effect) and by continuity draws fluid axially inward from infinity (suction effect w_inf). The boundary layer has constant thickness independent of r (unique case in fluid dynamics) because centrifugal-vs-viscous balance does not depend on r. The local Reynolds Re = r^2 Omega/nu, with turbulence transition at Re ~ 3e5 (large/fast disks). The 4 application categories:
- HDD/floppy storage Omega = 300-1000 rad/s air, delta = 1-2 mm (now deprecated for SSD STMicroelectronics Catania-Agrate)
- Biotech-lab centrifuges Omega = 50-500 rad/s water/buffer, delta = 0.3-0.8 mm (IIT Genoa, IRCCS, ENEA Casaccia)
- Axial turbomachinery Omega = 200-3000 rad/s gas/steam (Ansaldo Energia Genoa turbines, Avio SpA Colleferro Vega motors)
- Helicopter-EV rotor aerodynamics Omega = 30-2000 rad/s (Leonardo Helicopters Cascina Costa, Stellantis EV Mirafiori, Ferrari ePower Maranello). The canonical CFD validation: von Karman flow is benchmark case for OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, SU2 used by CINECA Marconi100 + Leonardo HPC pre-exascale 250 PFlops 2023 for k-omega SST and LES turbulent code validation at Politecnico Milan 1863, Politecnico Turin 1859, UniNa Federico II Naples aerospace engineering
