Tully-Fisher relation spiral galaxy calculator
The Tully-Fisher relation calculator determines the absolute magnitude M_B, luminosity L (in solar units) and baryonic mass M_bar of a disk galaxy from the maximum disk rotation velocity V_rot, per the empirical relation by R. Brent Tully (Institute for Astronomy Hawaii) and J. Richard Fisher (NRAO Green Bank) published in 1977 in Astronomy & Astrophysics vol. 54, p. 661 ("A new method of determining distances to galaxies"). The fundamental relation reveals tight correlation between spiral galaxy luminosity and rotational velocity: L ∝ V_rot⁴ (B-band classical). The inverse logarithmic form used as distance estimator: M_B = -10·log₁₀(V_rot/220 km/s) - 19.5, with V_rot disk rotation velocity in km/s measured from HI 21 cm profile width (radio surveys ALFALFA Arecibo, WALLABY ASKAP), M_B absolute magnitude B-band (Johnson photometric filter 440 nm), M_sun_B = +5.48 solar B-band absolute magnitude, hence L/L_sun = 10^((5.48 - M_B)/2.5). Underlying physics: in circular gravitational equilibrium V_rot² = G·M_dyn/R; assumptions of approximately constant mass-to-light ratio M/L and uniform surface density Σ imply L ∝ V_rot⁴ (Aaronson-Huchra-Mould 1979).
The K-band modern form (Verheijen 2001 ApJ 563, 694) M_K = -10.5·log₁₀(W₂₀/2) - 22 with W₂₀ HI profile width at 20% peak reduces scatter (infrared K 2.2 µm less sensitive to dust extinction and young stellar populations). The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (Stacy McGaugh 2000 ApJ 533, L99) M_baryonic = A · V_rot⁴ with constant A ≈ 50 M_sun·s⁴/km⁴ includes stellar + cold HI + molecular H₂ mass and extends from gas-dominated dwarf galaxies to giant spirals, providing one of the most stringent tests of ΛCDM dark matter versus MOND modified gravity Milgrom 1983. Applications:
- Distance Hubble ladder spiral galaxy distances via V_rot from HI 21 cm
- H_0 measurement SBF + Cepheid calibration (Madore-Freedman)
- galaxy mass M_dyn = V_rot²·R/G
- ΛCDM vs MOND test via BTF
