Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect y parameter calculator
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich thermal (tSZ) effect calculator determines the Compton y parameter integrated along the line-of-sight in a galaxy cluster, per the formulation by Rashid Sunyaev and Yakov Zeldovich 1972 (Comments on Astrophysics and Space Physics, vol. 4, p. 173). The physical phenomenon: cosmic microwave background CMB photons at T_CMB = 2.725 K (Penzias & Wilson 1965 Nobel 1978 discovery) traverse the Intracluster Medium (ICM) hot gas (10⁷-10⁸ K) of a galaxy cluster and undergo inverse Compton scattering with relativistic thermal electrons, receiving an energy boost producing a spectral distortion of the Planck blackbody radiation, with decrement at low frequencies (Rayleigh-Jeans, ν<217 GHz) and increment at high frequencies (Wien, ν>217 GHz), null at 217 GHz (SZ null frequency). The line-of-sight integrated formula: y = ∫ (k_B·T_e / m_e·c²) · σ_T · n_e · dl. Uniform cluster path-length L approximation: y ≈ (k_B·T_e / m_e·c²) · σ_T · n_e · L. Rayleigh-Jeans distortion: ΔT/T_CMB = -2·y (decrement at ν<217 GHz).
Physical constants: k_B = 1.381×10⁻²³ J/K (Boltzmann); m_e·c² = 511 keV = 8.187×10⁻¹⁴ J (electron rest mass); σ_T = 6.652×10⁻²⁹ m² (Thomson cross-section); T_CMB = 2.725 K. The 4 unique features of SZ effect:
- Redshift-independent (unlike X-ray bremsstrahlung that drops as (1+z)⁻⁴, SZ remains constant in surface brightness even at z>1, enabling high-z cluster surveys)
- Mass-temperature proxy via Y_500 = ∫ y·dA in Mpc² connected to M_500 cluster mass via Y-M scaling relation Planck 2014 (Y_500 ∝ M_500^1.79)
- Unique spectral signature (decrement+increment+null 217 GHz, distinguishable from primordial CMB)
- σ_8 cosmology via cluster mass function abundance. The Italian applications:
