NFW Navarro-Frenk-White dark matter halo calculator
The NFW profile calculator determines the radial dark matter density distribution ρ(r) in galactic halo, per the formulation by Julio F. Navarro, Carlos S. Frenk, Simon D.M. White 1996 ApJ "The structure of cold dark matter halos" (vol. 462, p. 563) Durham + DAMTP Cambridge + INAOE Mexico, based on N-body cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological simulations. The classic NFW formula: ρ(r) = ρ_0 / [(r/r_s) · (1 + r/r_s)²], with ρ_0 characteristic density, r_s scale radius where logarithmic slope α = -2 (inner/outer transition), r radius from halo center. For r << r_s: ρ ∝ 1/r (dense central cusp); r >> r_s: ρ ∝ 1/r³ (outer decay).
Total mass within r: M(r) = 4π ρ_0 r_s³ · [ln(1 + r/r_s) - (r/r_s)/(1+r/r_s)].
Concentration parameter: c = r_vir / r_s. Milky Way c ≈ 12-15.
Rotational velocity V²_circ(r) = G·M(r)/r → flat galactic rotation curves (Vera Rubin 1970 dark matter evidence).
Physics: cold dark matter halo hierarchically formed (Press-Schechter 1974) during matter-radiation equality z_eq ≈ 3400 + cosmic dark ages z=20-1100 + first galaxies cosmic dawn z>5.
Modern extensions:
- Einasto 1965 profile ρ(r) = ρ_e exp[-(2/α)((r/r_e)^α - 1)] α=0.17 cosmological halos
- cuspy vs cored dwarf galaxies puzzle (NFW predicts cusp ρ∝1/r vs observed cored ρ=const = "core-cusp problem")
