Kullback-Leibler divergence KL bit information theory calculator

The Kullback-Leibler divergence calculator determines the asymmetric distance D_KL(P||Q) between two probability distributions P and Q in bit (log base 2) or nat (natural log), per the formulation by Solomon Kullback and Richard Leibler 1951 in "On Information and Sufficiency" published in Annals of Mathematical Statistics vol. 22, p. 79 (relative entropy, information divergence, KL distance). The general formula: D_KL(P || Q) = Σ_x P(x) · log₂(P(x)/Q(x)) in bit, or D_KL(P || Q) = Σ_x P(x) · ln(P(x)/Q(x)) in nat. For binary distributions P=(p, 1-p) and Q=(q, 1-q): D_KL(P||Q) = p·log(p/q) + (1-p)·log((1-p)/(1-q)).

Asymmetry: D_KL(P||Q) ≠ D_KL(Q||P) (not a true metric, no triangle inequality), always ≥ 0 (Gibbs inequality 1902), = 0 iff P = Q a.e.

Jensen-Shannon divergence (symmetric): D_JS(P,Q) = ½·D_KL(P||M) + ½·D_KL(Q||M) with M = (P+Q)/2, range [0, log(2)] nat or [0, 1] bit, √D_JS is a metric (Endres-Schindelin 2003 IEEE Trans. Information Theory).

Cross-entropy relation: H(P,Q) = H(P) + D_KL(P||Q) with H(P) = -Σ P·log(P) Shannon entropy 1948 and H(P,Q) = -Σ P·log(Q) cross-entropy.

Italian KL divergence calculation examples

  • Identical distributions p=0.5 q=0.5 (base test): D_KL(P||Q) = 0.5·log₂(0.5/0.5) + 0.5·log₂(0.5/0.5) = 0 + 0 = 0 bit exactly (Gibbs inequality limit). D_KL(Q||P) = 0 bit. M = 0.5. D_JS = 0 bit. When P=Q divergence is zero, fundamental theorem confirmed
  • Extremely different distributions p=0.9 q=0.1 (coin biased detection): D_KL(P||Q) = 0.9·log₂(0.9/0.1) + 0.1·log₂(0.1/0.9) = 0.9·3.17 − 0.1·3.17 = 2.536 bit. D_KL(Q||P) = 0.1·log₂(0.1/0.9) + 0.9·log₂(0.9/0.1) = 2.536 bit (special case binary symmetric q=1−p). D_JS ≈ 0.531 bit (close to max log₂(2) = 1). Example: biased coin detection p=90% head vs fair p=50%, after n flips n ≈ 1/D_KL ≈ 0.4 flips evidence accumulation significant
  • Clear asymmetry p=0.3 q=0.7: D_KL(P||Q) = 0.3·log₂(0.3/0.7) + 0.7·log₂(0.7/0.3) = 0.3·(−1.222) + 0.7·1.222 = 0.489 bit. D_KL(Q||P) ≈ 0.489 bit (binary symmetry). D_JS ≈ 0.121 bit

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kullback-Leibler divergence?

Asymmetric distance measure between two probability distributions P and Q, defined Solomon Kullback and Richard Leibler 1951 Annals Math. Statistics 22, 79: D_KL(P||Q) = Σ P(x)·log₂(P(x)/Q(x)) bit, or ln nat. Also called relative entropy or information divergence. Always ≥ 0 (Gibbs inequality), = 0 iff P=Q. Asymmetry: D_KL(P||Q) ≠ D_KL(Q||P), not a true metric. Used in ML cross-entropy loss.

Binary KL divergence formula?

For binary distributions P=(p, 1-p) and Q=(q, 1-q): D_KL(P||Q) = p·log(p/q) + (1-p)·log((1-p)/(1-q)). In bit use log₂, in nat use ln. Example p=0.9, q=0.1 → D_KL ≈ 2.536 bit, very different distributions. Asymmetry: D_KL(Q||P) computed swapping p and q. For continuous data: integral ∫ p(x)·log(p(x)/q(x)) dx. Always ≥ 0 with equality iff P=Q almost everywhere (Gibbs).

Symmetric Jensen-Shannon divergence?

Jensen-Shannon divergence is symmetric KL version: D_JS(P,Q) = ½·D_KL(P||M) + ½·D_KL(Q||M) with M = (P+Q)/2 mean distribution. Range [0, log(2)] nat or [0, 1] bit. Advantages: D_JS(P,Q) = D_JS(Q,P) symmetric, always finite even with different supports, √D_JS is true metric (Endres-Schindelin 2003 IEEE Trans. Information Theory). Used GAN Goodfellow 2014 minimax.

Binary distributions KL example?

Binary KL examples: 1) p=0.5 q=0.5 identical → D_KL = 0 bit (Gibbs); 2) p=0.9 q=0.1 extreme → D_KL ≈ 2.536 bit (coin biased detection); 3) p=0.3 q=0.7 asymmetry → D_KL ≈ 0.489 bit; 4) p=0.5 q=0.6 similar → D_KL ≈ 0.029 bit (slight noise).
