Isentropic flow stagnation properties calculator
The isentropic flow calculator determines the stagnation property ratios of a perfect gas in 1D adiabatic reversible (isentropic) flow from Mach number M = v/a (velocity / local speed of sound) and specific heat ratio γ = c_p/c_v (γ = 1.4 standard air, γ = 1.33 methane CH₄, γ = 1.67 helium He, γ = 1.29 water vapor, γ = 1.28 carbon dioxide CO₂). The 4 fundamental isentropic relations for perfect gas:
- Temperature ratio T₀/T = 1 + (γ-1)/2 · M² (kinetic energy adiabatically converted to enthalpy)
- Pressure ratio p₀/p = [1 + (γ-1)/2·M²]^(γ/(γ-1)) (reversible isentropic compression, ds=0)
- Density ratio ρ₀/ρ = [1 + (γ-1)/2·M²]^(1/(γ-1)) (perfect gas barotropic pv^γ = const)
- Area-Mach ratio A/A* = (1/M)·[(2/(γ+1))(1 + (γ-1)/2·M²)]^((γ+1)/(2(γ-1))) (De Laval CD nozzle 1888). The subscript 0 = stagnation conditions (isentropic state brought to rest, p₀, T₀, ρ₀), A* = critical throat area where M=1 (choked flow, sonic blockage) and v* = a* critical sound speed. The 4 flow regimes: subsonic M<1 (compressor, intake), sonic M=1 (critical throat T₀/T=1.2 p₀/p=1.893 ρ₀/ρ=1.577 A/A*=1 with γ=1.4), supersonic 1<M<5 (Vega P120C, Eurofighter Typhoon Mach 2.35), hypersonic M>5 (re-entry IRENE 2018, CIRA SCIROCCO Mach 12 Capua). The tabulated values γ=1.4 air: M=0.5: T₀/T=1.05 p₀/p=1.186; M=1: T₀/T=1.2 p₀/p=1.893 ρ₀/ρ=1.577 A/A*=1; M=2: T₀/T=1.8 p₀/p=7.824 ρ₀/ρ=4.347 A/A*=1.687; M=3: T₀/T=2.8 p₀/p=36.73 ρ₀/ρ=13.12 A/A*=4.235; M=5: T₀/T=6 p₀/p=529.1 ρ₀/ρ=88.18 A/A*=25; M=10: T₀/T=21 p₀/p≈4.24×10⁴ A/A*=535.9.
