Hernquist profile galaxy bulge mass calculator
The Hernquist profile calculator determines the spheroidal mass distribution of elliptical galaxy bulges and central bulges of spirals using the analytical model introduced by Lars Hernquist 1990 in "An Analytical Model for Spherical Galaxies and Bulges" published in The Astrophysical Journal vol. 356, p. 359 (Princeton/Harvard CfA).
Spheroidal density: ρ(r) = (M · a) / (2π) · 1 / [r · (r + a)³], where M is total bulge mass in M_sun, a is the Hernquist scale radius in kpc, r the spherical radius in kpc.
Cumulative mass within r: M(r) = M · r² / (r + a)² (closed-form analytical, essential for fast N-body simulations).
De Vaucouleurs effective radius r_e (projected semi-light radius): r_e ≈ 1.8153 · a, related to the R^(1/4) surface brightness profile of de Vaucouleurs 1948 Annales d'Astrophysique vol. 11, 247.
Physics: the Hernquist model is the 3D analytical counterpart of de Vaucouleurs profile obtained integrating density along line-of-sight; finite total mass (unlike Jaffe 1983 model log-divergent), central cusp ρ ∝ r⁻¹ (compatible with N-body cold dark matter Navarro-Frenk-White 1996), and asymptotic profile ρ ∝ r⁻⁴ for r >> a.
Hernquist gravitational potential: Φ(r) = -G·M / (r + a), very simple (essential for accelerations N-body Tree-code Barnes-Hut 1986).
4 Italian bulge categories:
- Classical bulges (formed by major mergers, M ~ 10¹⁰-10¹² M_sun, M31 Andromeda)
- Pseudo-bulges (formed by secular disk evolution, disk-like, M ~ 10⁹ M_sun, NGC 1097 SB)
- Composite bulges (Milky Way boxy/peanut + classical ~30%)
- Nuclear star clusters (NSC ~10⁶-10⁸ M_sun, separate from bulge, present in 80% late-type INAF SDSS 2014). Italian applications:
