How to compute diffraction grating: optical phenomenon of constructive interference between rays diffracted by periodic structure of equally spaced parallel lines, basis of spectrometers, monochromators, CD/DVD/Blu-ray, fiber optics. Fundamental equation (Joseph Fraunhofer 1814): d * sin(theta) = m * lambda, where d is pitch (distance between lines, d=1/N with N lines/mm), theta diffraction angle, m integer order (...-2, -1, 0, +1, +2...), lambda wavelength. Essential tool for analytical spectroscopy (HPLC Agilent, atomic absorption Bruker), astronomy (Keck HIRES Mauna Kea Hawaii, ELT Cerro Armazones Chile), consumer electronics (CD 780 nm laser, DVD 650 nm, Blu-ray 405 nm), physics teaching, laser devices (Nd:YAG, He-Ne 633 nm). Maximum order: m_max = floor(d/lambda). Rayleigh resolving power: R = N*m with N=illuminated lines.
Diffraction grating formulas
Fundamental equation: d * sin(theta) = m * lambda. Joseph Fraunhofer (Germany 1787-1826) Munich optician, invented high-precision gratings 1814 observing solar spectrum (Fraunhofer A-K lines). Example 600 lines/mm grating, lambda=650 nm red, order m=1: d=1/600=1.67 um=1667 nm. sin(theta)=1*650/1667=0.39, theta=22.98°. Order 0: direct passage theta=0 (no diffraction).
Maximum number of orders: |m_max| = floor(d/lambda). High-density gratings (>2000 lines/mm) only have m=0,1,2 visible in visible range. Low-density (300 lines/mm) have m up to 5-6. Example CD-ROM 1351 lines/mm, lambda=650 nm: m_max=1351/650=2.08, so m=0,1,2.
Angular dispersion: D = d(theta)/d(lambda) = m / (d*cos(theta)). Measures how two close lambdas are angularly separated. Example 600 lines/mm m=1, theta=20°: D=1/(1667*0.94)=6.4e-4 rad/nm = 0.037°/nm. High-resolution spectrometers use small d (high density) for high dispersion.
Rayleigh resolving power: R = lambda/delta_lambda = N * m, where N=total illuminated lines, m=order. Example 1800 lines/mm * 50 mm width = 90,000 lines, m=1: R=90,000, delta_lambda=lambda/R=500/90,000=0.0056 nm resolving. Allows separating sodium NaD doublet 589.0/589.6 nm (delta=0.6 nm).
Transmission vs reflection gratings: transmission (Fraunhofer original): light passes through opaque lines. Reflection (Rowland 1882, Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh): light reflected off blazed grooves optimized for specific order (echelle gratings). Reflection more efficient, used in modern spectroscopy. Holographic gratings: laser interferometric recording for high precision (no scratch errors, low scattered light).
Blaze grating equation: blaze angle gamma_B for maximum efficiency in order m: 2 * d * sin(gamma_B) * cos(gamma_B - theta_i) = m * lambda_blaze. Example astronomical echelle m=80, lambda=500 nm, gamma_B=70°: high efficiency concentrated in high orders.
History and context

Limits and considerations
- Equation d*sin(theta)=m*lambda valid for infinitely thin gratings (idealization); real ones have finite thickness, triangular blaze profile optimized for specific order.
- Order m=0 (direct passage) always present, not useful spectroscopically. Spectrometers filter m=0.
- Overlapping orders: m=2 lambda=300 nm UV overlaps m=1 lambda=600 nm visible. Cut-off optical filters required.
- Transmission grating max efficiency 30%, blaze reflection 80-95% for designed order.
- Maximum resolution R=N*m: limited by illuminated line count, grating dimension.
- Chromatic aberration spectrographs: meridian lines perpendicular, spherical focus differs for lambda.
- Stray light scattered noise: 0.01% holographic gratings, 0.1% mechanical ruled (Newport ruled grating).
- Laser damage threshold: 100 mJ/cm² standard (Newport), 1000 mJ/cm² high-power gratings nLight Spectra-Physics.
- Polarization: grating efficiency differs s vs p polarization, important for Q-switch laser precision.
- Spectral operating range: holographic UV-VIS 200-800 nm, NIR 800-2000 nm, MIR/FIR 2-30 um specialized.
Common errors
- Confusing d (line spacing pitch) with N (lines/mm density): d=1/N reciprocal relationship.
- Demanding m=2 visible for lambda > d/2: m_max=floor(d/lambda) limits physical orders.
- Neglecting cos(theta) in dispersion D=m/(d*cos(theta)): increases significantly at large angles.
- Using transmission equation for reflection: same formula but different blaze, different efficiencies.
- Calculating resolving power R=N without multiplying by m: R=N*m correct.
- Confusing grating with prism: grating linear dispersion in lambda, prism non-linear (refractive index).
- Neglecting overlapping orders: cut-off filters mandatory for multi-order spectrographs.
- Using lines/inch (USA imperial) vs lines/mm (SI): conversion 1 line/mm = 25.4 lines/inch.
- Calculating negative orders without considering oblique incidence: sin(theta_d) = m*lambda/d + sin(theta_i).
- Neglecting polarization effects for laser: s/p efficiency very different at large angles.
