How to compute Compton scattering: inelastic scattering phenomenon between photon and free (or weakly bound) electron discovered by Arthur Holly Compton (USA 1922) Nobel Physics 1927. Scattering formula: delta_lambda = lambda' - lambda = lambda_C * (1 - cos(theta)), where lambda_C = h/(m_e*c) = 2.42631 pm Compton wavelength of electron, theta scattering angle between incident and scattered photon. The effect demonstrates quantum nature of light: photon transfers momentum to electron, losing energy (lambda increases). Essential tool for medical physics (radiotherapy, CT scan), gamma astrophysics (CGRO Compton Gamma Ray Observatory NASA 1991-2000, AGILE ASI Italy 2007, Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope NASA 2008), airport security scanners, gamma food sterilization, semiconductor radiation testing CERN. Backscattering theta=180°: max delta_lambda = 2*lambda_C = 4.852 pm. Energy: E_out=h*c/lambda', T_electron=E_in-E_out energy conservation.
Compton scattering formulas
Compton equation: delta_lambda = lambda' - lambda = (h/m_e/c) * (1 - cos(theta)) = lambda_C * (1 - cos(theta)). lambda_C = 2.42631e-12 m = 2.426 pm Compton wavelength of electron. Example X-rays 100 keV (lambda=12.4 pm), theta=90°: delta_lambda=2.426*(1-0)=2.426 pm, lambda'=14.8 pm. Forward scattering theta=0°: delta=0 (no scattering). Backscattering theta=180°: delta=4.852 pm (maximum).
Energy conservation: h*nu = h*nu' + T_e (T_e electron kinetic energy). E_in = E_out + T_e. Example: 100 keV scattering 90°: E_out=h*c/14.8 pm=83.8 keV. T_e=100-83.8=16.2 keV. For high-energy gamma rays (>100 keV) Compton dominates over photoelectric effect (total absorption).
Momentum conservation: p_gamma = p_gamma' + p_e (vector). p_gamma=h*nu/c=h/lambda. Components: p_x: h/lambda = h/lambda'*cos(theta) + p_e*cos(phi). p_y: 0 = h/lambda'*sin(theta) - p_e*sin(phi). From which: tan(phi) = sin(theta) / ((1 + E/(m_e*c²)) - cos(theta)). phi electron recoil angle (always 0 < phi < 90°).
Compton wavelength: lambda_C = h/(m_e*c) = 6.626e-34/(9.11e-31 * 3e8) = 2.4263e-12 m = 2.426 pm. Fundamental electron characteristic, universal constant. For other particles: lambda_C(proton)=1.32 fm, lambda_C(neutron)=1.32 fm, lambda_C(muon)=11.7 fm. Klein-Nishina formula 1928 describes differential cross-section d_sigma/d_Omega in relativistic QED.
Inverse Compton scattering: high-energy electron strikes low-energy photon, photon gains energy (boost). Astrophysics: relativistic jets AGN (M87 black hole), pulsar Crab Nebula, GeV-TeV cosmic rays. Synchrotron-self-Compton SSC blazar GeV emission model. Compton telescope CGRO 1991 NASA, AGILE 2007 ASI Italy, Fermi LAT 2008 NASA.

Worked numerical examples
Example 1 - American medical CT scan X-rays 100 keV. Incident energy E_in=100 keV (lambda=12.40 pm). Scattering angle theta=45° (medium, typical CT scan around patient). delta_lambda = 2.426 * (1-cos(45°)) = 2.426 * 0.293 = 0.711 pm. lambda' = 12.40 + 0.711 = 13.11 pm. E_out = h*c/lambda' = 1240/13.11 = 94.6 keV. Energy transferred to electron T_e = 100 - 94.6 = 5.4 keV (ionizing radiation that damages cell DNA). Medical industry: Siemens Somatom Force scanner, GE Revolution Apex, Canon Aquilion ONE. USA market: GE Healthcare Wisconsin, Philips Andover MA, Siemens Malvern PA HQ.
Example 2 - Compton's original 1923 experiment. Compton used MoKalpha 17.5 keV (lambda=71 pm, convenient intensity) scattering on graphite (carbon nearly free electrons). Theta=90°. delta_lambda = 2.426 * (1-0) = 2.426 pm. lambda' = 71 + 2.426 = 73.4 pm. delta_lambda/lambda = 3.4% (measurable Bragg crystallographer). Energy: E_out=1240/73.4=16.9 keV (vs E_in=17.5), T_e=0.6 keV. Compton definitively demonstrated quantum nature of light: only if photons have momentum p=h/lambda formula derivable. Newton corpuscular and Maxwell wave both insufficient, requires Einstein 1905 quantum.
Example 3 - American maximum gamma backscattering. 137Cs cesium decay source E_in=662 keV (lambda=1.87 pm). Theta=180° complete backscattering (statistically rare but fundamental). delta_lambda = 2.426 * (1-(-1)) = 4.852 pm. lambda' = 1.87 + 4.852 = 6.72 pm. E_out = 1240/6.72 = 184 keV. T_e = 662-184 = 478 keV (maximum transferable energy). Compton edge spectroscopy: in NaI(Tl) Geiger-Muller detectors appears peak at 478 keV called "Compton edge". Routine gamma spectrometer calibration, isotope identification security port applications. USA NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Example 4 - high-energy gamma Fermi LAT NASA. Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope NASA 2008 LEO satellite gamma-ray sky observation. E_in=1000 keV=1 MeV (lambda=1.24 pm). Theta=60°. delta_lambda = 2.426*(1-0.5) = 1.213 pm. lambda' = 1.24+1.213 = 2.45 pm. E_out=1240/2.45=506 keV. T_e=1000-506=494 keV. Compton telescope working principle: cosmic gamma rays interact with silicate scintillator, first Compton scatter then pair production. Fermi LAT discoveries: Crab Nebula gamma-ray flares, blazar 3C 454.3 flares, dark matter annihilation upper limits. Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt MD primary mission control.
Example 5 - low-energy soft X-rays. lambda=50 pm (E_in=24.8 keV soft X-ray). Theta=30° small angle. delta_lambda=2.426*(1-0.866)=0.325 pm. lambda'=50.325 pm. delta/lambda=0.65% (small but measurable XRD instrumentation). Compton significant for energies 50-150 keV (medical imaging). Below 50 keV: photoelectric effect dominates (total absorption, no scattering). Above 1 MeV: pair production (creation e+e- pair, gamma > 1.022 MeV =2*511 keV threshold). Compton range optimal medical imaging. USA: Princeton PPPL nuclear physics, Oak Ridge ORNL spectroscopy.
Limits and considerations
- Free electron at rest approximation: in reality bound atomic electrons with ionization energy 13.6 eV (H) to 100 keV (W), binding energy correction.
- Klein-Nishina differential formula 1928 d_sigma/d_Omega valid relativistic QED, not simple isotropic geometry (theta anisotropy).
- Coherence-incoherence: elastic Thomson scattering (low E) vs inelastic Compton (high E): transition at E~m_e*c²=511 keV.
- Photoelectric effect dominates E<50 keV: photon totally absorbed, no Compton scattering.
- Pair production E>1.022 MeV: gamma converts to e+e- pair, secondary Compton scattering.
- Multiple scattering thick tissues: Monte Carlo simulations (PENELOPE, GEANT4, MCNP) for medical imaging dosimetry.
- Distribution anisotropy: forward scattering (small theta) prevails for high-energy gamma.
- Polarization: Compton scattering polarization modifies angular distribution (Klein-Nishina with polarization).
- Bound electrons (atomic): binding energy corrections, oscillator strength, coherent Rayleigh scattering for E<10 keV.
- Inverse Compton: high-E electrons + low-E photons -> high-E photons (astrophysics jets, M87 blazar).
Common errors
- Confusing lambda_C (electron Compton wavelength 2.426 pm) with lambda_C different particle (proton 1.32 fm).
- Neglecting (1-cos(theta)) factor: forward theta=0° no shift, backscattering theta=180° max shift.
- Calculating delta_lambda instead of lambda' (total): lambda' = lambda + delta_lambda.
- Using approximate non-relativistic Compton formula for E>>511 keV: requires general formula.
- Confusing Compton effect with photoelectric (total absorption) or pair production (E>1.022 MeV).
- Neglecting vector momentum conservation: phi electron recoil angle calculable from theta.
- Demanding Compton applicable UV-visible: at low energies elastic Thomson scattering dominates.
- Calculating in nm vs pm: lambda Compton electron 2.426 pm = 0.002426 nm.
- Klein-Nishina cross-section: include relativistic factor for high E, not just Thomson sigma_T.
- Inverse Compton: role swap, low-E photon gains energy from high-E electron.
