Bondi accretion rate calculator
The Bondi accretion rate calculator determines the amount of gas captured in free fall by a compact object (black hole, neutron star, white dwarf, protostar) immersed in a uniform gaseous medium per the formulation by Austrian cosmologist Hermann Bondi (1919-2005) published 1952 in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society "On spherically symmetrical accretion" at King's College London. The classic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton formula: Ṁ_Bondi = 4π · λ_c · G² · M² · ρ_∞ / c_s³, with G gravitational constant (6.674×10⁻¹¹), M object mass kg, ρ_∞ ambient gas density kg/m³, c_s sound speed m/s, λ_c polytropic factor (γ = 5/3 → λ = 0.25; γ = 4/3 → λ = 0.71; γ = 1 isothermal → λ ≈ 1.12). The Bondi radius: r_B = G · M / c_s² (gravitational sphere of influence).
Free fall velocity at Bondi radius: v_ff = √(2GM/r_B) = √2 · c_s. Numerically for 1 M_sun in 10 K molecular cloud (c_s = 0.2 km/s) ρ = 10⁻²⁰ kg/m³: r_B = 7×10¹⁵ m = 50,000 AU; Ṁ ≈ 10⁻⁶ M_sun/year (protostellar formation).
For supermassive AGN BHs M = 10⁹ M_sun in 10⁷ K intracluster medium (c_s = 500 km/s) ρ = 10⁻²⁵ kg/m³: r_B = 50 kpc; Ṁ ≈ 10⁻³ M_sun/year.
Relative velocity of object vs medium (Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton 1944) modifies formula: Ṁ_BHL = 4π G² M² ρ / (v_rel² + c_s²)^{3/2}.
