Bödewadt rotating fluid stationary disk calculator
The Bödewadt layer calculator determines the boundary layer thickness, Ekman pumping velocity and maximum radial inflow of a fluid rotating uniformly at infinity (Ω) above a stationary disk, per the exact solution of Navier-Stokes equations by Hans Bödewadt 1940 ZAMM 20, 241 "Die Drehströmung über festem Grunde". The problem is the inverse of the von Kármán 1921 swirl (rotating disk in still fluid): here the far-field fluid rotates with constant angular velocity Ω while the disk is stationary; wall friction decelerates the fluid near the disk producing a radial inflow toward the axis and an axial suction component toward the disk (Ekman pumping). The classical formulas use similarity variable ζ = z·√(Ω/ν), with z axial height, ν kinematic viscosity m²/s, Ω angular velocity rad/s: Bödewadt thickness δ_B = 8.0·√(ν/Ω) m (thicker than von Kármán δ_K = 5.5·√(ν/Ω)); pumping velocity w∞ = +1.349·√(ν·Ω) m/s (toward disk, suction); maximum radial inflow u_max ≈ -0.467·r·Ω m/s (negative = inward).
The physics: the balance between centrifugal force of the rotating fluid and the radial pressure gradient is broken by the no-slip condition at the wall; pressure stays the far-field value but rotation is braked near the disk, so the radial gradient pushes fluid toward the axis and continuity generates the axial suction component toward the disk. The 4 application categories:
- Geophysical meteorology Coriolis Ω = 2·Ω_Earth·sinφ ≈ 10⁻⁴ rad/s, atmosphere ν_air = 1.5×10⁻⁵ m²/s, δ_B ≈ 1 km planetary Ekman layer
- Tornadoes and cyclones Ω = 0.01-0.1 rad/s, δ_B = 5-15 m surface tornadic layer
- Oceanography cyclonic eddies Adriatic-Ionian Ω ≈ 10⁻⁴ rad/s, water ν = 10⁻⁶ m²/s, δ_B ≈ 80 cm
- Industrial reactors mixing tank Ω = 10-100 rad/s, δ_B = sub-mm. The Italian applications:
